What Are We Doing???

I was browsing the toy isles the other day as the kids’ birthdays are coming up here pretty quick.  I’m generally not impressed, and have a hard time thinking of anything to get them.  They don’t need anything.  But its their birthday.  Ethan already got a desk, and is having a “big” party because he’s turning 10.  OMG  He’s turning 10!!!  We told him that he won’t be getting presents from us, but we’d help him get a Nintendo DS or one game if that’s what he chooses to do with his money.  For Natalie though.  I’m at a loss.  She’s usually the easy one to buy for.  She has been playing with her Barbies more, so I ventured to that isle.  This is what I found:

Do you see what I see, or am I crazy?

A Top Model doll with a before and after shot?!?!?!

Do we really need to teach our little girls, in every aspect of their lives, that they aren’t good enough unless they have a makeover, are super skinny, have perfect hair/makeup/clothes/etc???

Media is bad enough, but are we really adding this to their play time?

This baffles me and makes me sad.  I’ve never been a big feminist or anything, but I do have a problem with ruining little girls self image.  Bratz dolls are bad enough with their skimpy clothes and obscene makeup.  But this just bothers me.  There is enough in life that makes us grow up quickly, shouldn’t we cherish and encourage innocence???  Maybe its just me…I dunno.

  1. The bowling party looks neat, will it be black light? Q-tip has been asking to go bowling during cosmic bowling forever. Im so not on top of that…

I am not much of a Bratz fan but I dont have much interaction with them either. I also do not like those ponies, puppies or whatever other animal they choose to turn into prostotots! Have you seen those? They are horrible. Good luck shopping.

  2. My initial reaction was that they were trying to be humorous, but after further reflection I think you’re right that it just reinforces negative image stereotypes.
